Preoperative Tamsulosin to Prevent Postoperative Urinary Retention: A Randomized Controlled Trial

BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy tamsulosin, administered preoperatively, for prevention postoperative urinary retention (POUR). POUR is a common complication abdominal surgery, leading use catheters, which are risk factor tract infection. Tamsulosin uroselective alpha-1a blocker used treatment lower symptoms.Materials and methodsA randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial undertaken from August 2015 May 2018. Adults undergoing elective inpatient surgery were randomized receive either tamsulosin 0.4 mg or placebo daily 7 d before continuing up postoperatively. The primary outcome need at least single intermittent catheterization Secondary outcomes included first postvoid residual volume, number catheterizations, replacement an indwelling catheter, hospital length stay, infection within 30 surgery.ResultsA total 158 participants enrolled, with final analytic cohort 141 participants. two groups had similar baseline characteristics, operative timing catheter removal. There no difference in incidence between (26% versus 31% placebo, P = 0.49). also any secondary groups. Epidural usage, open age <50 identified as factors POUR.ConclusionsPerioperative prophylaxis not effective reducing patients surgery.
